A Vision Transformed: From Factory to Forest

🌿 A Vision Transformed: From Factory to Forest
This ambitious expansion repurposed a former tobacco factory site into a 102-acre ecological sanctuary, blending wetlands, elevated boardwalks, sculptural islands, and nature-based water systems. Designed by Turenscape and Arsomsilp, the project functions as a modern “sponge city,” capturing stormwater, naturally filtering pollution, fostering biodiversity, and managing climate resilience—all within a tight 18-month timeline and modest budget.
Highlights & Facilities
-
Wetland lakes and islands designed to store and purify rainwater, support native flora and fauna, and showcase innovative green design
-
Elevated pedestrian skywalks spanning over wetlands and forested areas, offering immersive routes surrounded by nature
-
Extensive running, walking, and cycling pathways—including 2.8 km for joggers and 3.4 km for cyclists—providing scenic, active routes that contrast with the original park’s loop-style layout
-
A central open-air amphitheatre and outdoor event plaza adjacent to repurposed warehouse buildings, now hosting cultural and community programs
-
A nature learning centre, urban farming area, and dog park, making it a destination for families, pet owners, and environmental education
-
A 1.3 km “Green Bridge” connection linking Benjakitti Forest Park with Lumpini Park, forming part of Bangkok's elevated pedestrian and cycling network
Why It Matters
-
The expanded park now spans roughly 72 hectares (≈480,000 m²)—making it larger than Lumpini Park and marking it as Bangkok’s largest urban greenspace.
-
Designed to support Bangkok Metropolitan Administration’s “Green Bangkok 2030” goals, the extension helps elevate per‑resident green space and demonstrates sustainable ecological planning in a dense urban center. Here you’ll find wellness joggers, cyclists, picnickers, and even environmental learners gathering regularly.
The Benjakitti Forest Park expansion elevates Bangkok’s urban green space into a visionary ecological and recreational landmark—combining nature-first design, community amenities, and climate adaptability to offer a lasting public asset at the heart of the city.
